Epping house extensions by SCL Construction, Essex
SCL Construction extended and remodelled the ground and first floor of, what was, a 1950s chalet bungalow in Bury Road, Epping, Essex. The homeowners wanted more space for their growing family and additional space for entertaining.
We delivered a traditional build but used modern products to create a larger, high-end home. The family now enjoy open plan living and call their improved home the “party house”.
We began the project by meeting with the client about their requirements. We also held meetings with the architect and structural engineer to achieve the best design. We used cost engineering to get the project into an acceptable budget. Cost engineering is the practice of managing the costs involved on a construction project.
Our work included: Demolition of side and rear of existing building and side extension. Traditional strip foundation groundworks, concrete pumped from roadside. Extensive steelwork to provide open plan ground floor to rear and side of original building. Traditional cavity blockwork construction. We used high quality K Rend coloured render for the external finish.
Epping house extensions: Before and after photo
We installed a bespoke Shaker-style kitchen and installed a bespoke concrete sink in the downstairs WC. We relocated the first floor ensuite bathroom to allow a bedroom to be extended, and created a vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom. We also hand-built wardrobes for the master bedroom.
The client knew the types of materials and finishes they wanted for their home. On the new patio we used the same porcelain tiles as the kitchen, to create a feeling of “flow” when the bi fold doors are opened. In the garden, we also built retaining walls.
New kitchen in the extended Epping home, by SCL Construction, Essex
We built the extensions while the family were still living in the house. This meant maintaining a safe temporary kitchen area for the clients (two adults and two young children).
This project’s more complicated elements included: successfully installing steelwork to open the rear extension for the full bi fold doors, and the temporary propping of the first floor when the back of the building was removed.
